SI.com

Whenever you shoot for a wire service, you never really know where your photos will end up....usually, you never know, sometimes you will open a publication and be surprised, other times, somebody tells you....sometimes, photos you shoot never are published anywhere. Well, I was checking out photos on Sports Illustrated's website and I was pleasantly surprised to see that they had used one of my civil war photos. Click here to see it.

WPJA Winners

The results from the Wedding Photojournalist Association Fall 2005 contest are in and once again, I did pretty good. I had two images place. The image on top placed 2nd in the "Emotion" category and the image on the bottom placed 8th in the "Reception" category. It's always nice to place here because it is an international contest for photojournalistic wedding photographers, the best wedding PJ's in the world are in this group. Check out the WPJA website to see all the winners, there are, as always, some fantastic photos there.

Expensive Paper

This is a product shot I did today for the Holiday Gift Guide that Community Newspapers is running in all of their papers. Its a journal and fancy pen that together will cost you $185 at a fancy paper store at the new mall Bridgeport Village in Tualatin. Yikes!

Portrait of the day

Nothing too exciting, just a pretty boring portrait I shot today for the cover of a special section the Portland Business Journal is publishing in a couple weeks. I left room at the top for the text, there will be text along the bottom too, so I had them stand behind the railing to separate that text from the rest of the photo somewhat, trying to think about design while shooting a photo is important too.

I'm an idiot

This photo was shot by Chris Pietsch of the Register-Guard at the Civil War. That's me on the right looking like an idiot. What I am actually doing is trying to get out of the way because Terrance Whitehead and Demetrius Williams almost ran me over with the gatorade bucket, then I am lifting my camera over my head to try and get some kind of shot that I am way out of position for, when really all I am doing is ruining Chris' shot....here is what it looked like from my angle, Chris is on the left and on the right is R-G staffer Brian Davies, worst thing is, rumor has it, that this photo was published in the Guard for all to see. Great:

Soccer Championships

Before heading down to the Civil War Saturday morning I had to shoot the Oregon class 1A/2A boys soccer championship. It was fun, good game, great light, North Clackamas Christian (the team I was covering) lost, but I still made a couple nice frames.

Powerful.....

One of the most amazing and powerful and heartbreaking stories I have ever seen is in the Rocky Mountain News. It is a story about a Marine whose job is to notify family members of a loved ones death. Amazing, Amazing work. Go see it here, there are slide shows, the story and PDF's of the newspapers pages online. In my opinion, it should win a pulitzer.

Civil War

Shot the Civil War Saturday. It was cold and foggy and you could not shoot anything more than 20 yards away, but it was still fun. My take is on my Sports Shooter page.

Lucky Day?

So, a radio station here in Portland (KGON) has this promotion called "Workforce Payroll", basically, they give away $100 an hour to listners. It works like this, they call your name on the air and you have 10 minutes to call. If you call, you get $100 until the next name is called an hour later, if that person does not call, you stay on and get $200, etc, etc, etc. Anyway, so I was bored while listening, like a year ago and signed up online. On Tuesday, they called my name! I didn't even hear it, a guy I know from the Chamber of Commerce called me and told me about it...anyway, I was on for 2 hours and got $200! Sweet huh. Of course I already spent the money on new chrome for the Harley. Then the next day, I rode down 99E to Eugene on a perfect sunny day. Doesn't get much better than that.

More Volleyball

Saturday turned out to be a long, long day. It started out at 8am shooting volleyball, then after I sent my photos I went down to Corvallis to cover the OSU/Stanford game, then had to leave at half time to go back to Portland to shoot the championship volleyball match. Glad I did though, got some great jube photos. Above is the sports front of today's Ashland Daily Tiding's with my photo played huge. This is the front page of the Ashalnd apper today....this is an image from the 8am game Saturday......

Here is another action shot from the championship game.....

And last but not least, this is the same moment from the end of the match, just about 1 second later. This image ran in the Medford Mail-Tribune on Sunday (the Trib and Tidings are owned by the same company).....

State Volleyball

The Oregon State Volleyball Tournament got under way this morning....and I do mean this MORNING. The first game I had to shoot was at 8am. Yep 8am. I feel bad for the kids to have to get up that early. I got up at 6am and was at the arena by 7am to setup lights. I shot this from the stands looking directly over the net. Turned out pretty good I think.

10 Minutes

I shot this photo last week for the Wall Street Journal and it ran in today's paper. They needed a portrait of Dan Wieden, of the Wieden and Kennedy ad firm here in Portland.....basically, every Nike Ad and many super bowl ads you see where dreamed up by W+K. Anyway, so he is extremly busy and once I finally was able to setup a shoot, I was told he only had 10 minutes. It's a bummer when that happens, but you have to work with what you ahve to work with, so, I went to the building on hour early to setup 2-3 different locations to shoot him in in my 10 minutes. This was the third choice....but it worked the best. Funny how that happens sometimes. To see the article click here.

Slip Sliding Away

It has been way, way nice the last few days, luckily I have been able to take them off for the most part before things get real busy the rest of the week. I am so lucky to be able to stay home and play with my daughter every day, today we went to the park....she loves the slide. Oh yeah, and I've been able to put 200 miles on my Harley since Sunday...and that too is a very good thing!

Jarhead

It has been a long, long while since I have counted the days until the release of a new movie, but Jarhead just looked so freaking good I had to see it right away. So Jenn and I went and saw a 2pm showing this afternoon, let me tell you, it is fantastic. I've never been in the Corps, but from what Kevin has told me, what I have seen while visiting him on various bases, it is very real. There are some scenes I said "yeah right" to, but overall a great movie, go check it out. Watch the trailer here.

Here comes the.....Rev C.B Mitchelldyer.......

Ok, so if you remember, a while back I thought it would be fun to go online and get ordained. Well, last week it came in very, very handy for one of my clients. Turns out she is from another country and in order for her to stay here, get a new job and get a passport for the honeymoon, she needed to get married before actually getting married. They were going to go to the courthouse and have a judge do it, but did not realize that an appointment was needed far in advance, so in a pickle, she remembered my blog and asked me to marry them. I was honored. It was fun, nothing real formal, I spoke a bunch of gibberish, mixtures of stuff I only can sometimes hear at weddings, while taking photos of them at the same time and it was so fun. This is a photo of the newlyweds and the Preacher (me) after the big "service". They are still having a "wedding" in June, but now the legal stuff is out of the way. So, if you need a Rev for your wedding, give me a call :)!

Sports Shooter Update

Ok, Ok Kevin, I finally updated my Sports Shooter page, a lot of photos that are on my blog, some that are not, check it out. Now stop nagging me.
